Bharti Airtel, the second-biggest telecom player in India,has selected domestic playerTejas Networks for its optical network expansion. Recently, the Indian government brought a series of reforms for the telecom sector, benefitting the loss-making Vi and Airtel. As per the deal, TejasNetworks will supply, install and support its optical transmission products for Airtel's optical network, and support 5G backhaul, broadband applications, and business-to-business (B2B) services.

Airtel has been making significant investments in expanding its network and gearing up for India's much-awaited 5G rollout. This will also help in increasing its bandwidth for broadband and enterprise customers. "We are delighted to partner with Tejas in this key network intervention that will enable us to deliver a world-class experience to our customers," Bharti Airtel chief technology officer RandeepSekhon said in a statement.

Shares of the company on the Indian stock market jumped about 5 percent following this news. The Tata Group has also recently acquired a controlling stake in Tejas for Rs 1,890 crore. "We are delighted to expand our decade-long partnership with Airtel, which has established itself as one of the premier telecom service providers in the world," said Sanjay Nayak, the CEO and managing director of Tejas Networks. Under this contract, Tejas Networks will provide its multi-terabit TJ1600 DWDM/OTN products to augment Airtel's metro network capacity.
