Bosch and Daimler have teamed up together to bring us the mother of all IoT ecosystems. At the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart, Bosch and Daimler have worked together to create the world’s first driverless parking garage.
Called the Automated Valet System, it is debuting today at the parking garage for the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. It is made possible by collaboration between the infrastructure supplied by Bosch, and the car tech provided by Mercedes-Benz on its vehicles letting drivers to simply drive up, leave their car, and trust the system to negotiate and navigate the multi-story parking facility to find and park in a spot.
While it is a piece for show right now, Daimler says that the valet system will actually be able to work for museum visitors starting in 2018. The visitors will be able to use the app on smartphones and voila, the vehicle autonomously heads to the pick-up spot. And if the drivers want to drop their car off, all they have to do is designate a spot for the car in the app and the drives itself to its assigned parking spot, guided by the facility’s infrastructure and its own onboard sensors.
These sensors are provided by both Bosch and Daimler and are lined throughout the structure, and on the car, providing info about where the vehicles are located and moving throughout the facility, while also making it possible for the vehicle to sense and react to objects in its path, including pedestrians.
The debut will be followed by a trial phase that will, by no means, be short, with the local regulators also involved throughout to monitor its progress. Once it gets a sign-off from the safety agencies it goes into full pilot operation, and both Bosch and Daimler believe this will take place at the beginning of next year.
