WhatsApp voice calls are now available for Jio Phones and other KaiOS feature phone users worldwide. The new feature works on the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, whichrequires users to have active data connectivity for making WhatsApp calls. Kai OS has more than 100 million users, and the number is already expanding. The KaiOS based smartphones are primarily affordable, and JioPhone, which uses KaiOS, has been very popular in India. Apart from this, Nokia feature phones based on KaiOS have also been popular in developing countries like Indonesia and Nigeria.
The update was released by WhatsApp on Tuesday that enables WhatsApp VoIP for KaiOS-enabled devices worldwide.“We want to support communities that are on lighter operating systems in many places around the world. Bringing WhatsApp voice calls to KaiOS-enabled devices helps us connect the world privately through a service that is simple, reliable, and accessible to everyone - no matter what kind of mobile device they’re using,” said Matt Idema, COO of WhatsApp, in a statement.
With the new voice calling feature update, a call can be made over mobile-data or WiFi. The new feature further enhances the overall KaiOS user experience, providing people to stay connected and handle basic life needs. To get this new feature, KaiOS users will need to update to the latest version of the app. The users will be notified within the app when the update is available for them.
