For the 28th consecutive year, IBM has received the highest number of U.S. patents by a company in the duration of a year. Its leadership in acquiring U.S. patents in 2020 is due to the innovation in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud, quantum computing and security.

“IBM scientists and researchers received 9,130 U.S. patents in 2020, the most of any company, marking 28 consecutive years of IBM patent leadership,” said IBM in its statement.

930 of these patents were contributed by IBM India, the second-highest contributor to the global tally. “We are excited that India continues to be the second-highest contributor to IBM's patent leadership with 930 patents granted to inventors from India,” IBM Research India Director and CTO IBM India South Asia GargiDasgupta told PTI. “This reflects IBM's culture of nurturing scientific research and critical thinking that empowers innovation.”

“The culture of innovation at IBM is stronger than ever, thanks to our inventors worldwide who devote themselves to advancing the boundaries of knowledge in their respective fields every single day,” said Darío Gil, Senior Vice President and Director of IBM Research.
